RE/MAX of Western Canada has supported organ donor awareness since 2004, when one RE/MAX agent gave the gift of life to another.
Paul Belhumeur of RE/MAX 2000 Realty in Surrey, BC, had been suffering with polycystic kidney disease for 11 years when he was told he would need a new kidney. He started an e-mail campaign and without him knowing, his friend and colleague of more than 20 years, Ken Cowie, decided to get tested for the kidney donation. After months of testing and screening, Ken surprised Paul with the news that he was a match on Paul’s birthday! Both Paul and Ken are healthy and doing well, and they continue to be great friends and colleagues.
Paul and Ken celebrated their 15 year organ donation anniversary in June of this year. We wanted to do something special to commemorate this incredible story, so we reached out to Don Cherry, who is also a strong supporter of organ donation and organ donation awareness.
On September 24th during the annual RE/MAX 2000 Golf tournament, Roy Anderson, Executive Director, RE/MAX of Western Canada, presented both Paul and Ken with a framed, handwritten letter from Don Cherry, along with a letter from Elton Ash, Regional Executive Vice President, congratulating them on their 15 year organ donation anniversary.
